Supplies
To make this DIY yarn garland, you’ll need yarn, scissors, and pipe cleaners.
Yarn – Any yarn will work to make a yarn pumpkin. When it comes to making pom poms or other projects with yarn, thicker is quicker! If you have thicker yarn, you can make yarn pumpkins twice as fast!
Pipe Cleaners – Pipe cleaners can usually be found at any craft store. I bought these pipe cleaners on Amazon and cut them in half. I got 2 stems per piece.

Materials
- Yarn
- Pipe Cleaners
Tools
- Scissors
- Tape
- Pencil, pen or dowel
Instructions
- Cut an 8" piece of yarn and lay it out horizontally to use for tying the pumpkin after step 1.
- Wrap three fingers with yarn. I used Dollar Tree worsted yarn and I wrapped 100 times per pumpkin to make it nice and thick.
- Carefully slide the wraps off of your fingers holding things tightly. Lay the yarn wraps on top of the piece that was cut in step 1. Lay a 6" piece of pipe cleaner on top as shown in the image and tie a tight knot around the center. Be careful to keep your wraps centered. Snip the loose ends.
- Use a pencil or dowel to join the two pieces of pipe cleaner at the top and twist to create a loop in the center for hanging.
- Twist the ends of of the pipe cleaner around the dowel to make curly stems on both sides.
- String your pumpkins onto twine or yarn to hang.
Tips
After making your pumpkins with yarn, you’ll have loose ends. Just snip those off near the top or bottom where you won’t see the snips.
If you get loose wraps that are sticking out, tuck them inside the middle!
Happy crafting,
Denise
