Here you’ll find the basic things you’ll need to make cute gnomes whether they be Scandinavian gnomes, Swedish Tomte, or Nisse gnomes.
What Is Needed To Make A Gnome?
The materials needed to make a gnome are pretty standard. Each gnome must have a body, hat or braids, a beard, nose, and filler, but making gnomes special with unique gnome accessories is where the fun begins!

I like this faux fur for making beards for gnomes because of the variety of colors and sizes. I buy the small squares because they fit nicely in my craft storage drawers. These are from Amazon.
Pre-Cut Gnome Beard Faux Fur Fabric With Small Unfinished Wooden Balls for Gnome Nose
These pre-cut gnome beards are great for making quick gnomes or gifts. Look closely at the white beard. It shows what they look like on the back. They came as a set with all of the colors and I like the brown and gray the best.
You can make gnome braids with yarn but the item linked is to a kit with ready-made braids.
I recently purchased faux fur strips and I like being able to cut small pieces off of the strip to use on ornaments and sock gnomes. The ones linked are similar.
For larger gnomes, you can use a ping-pong ball. My favorite gnome noses are wooden bead halves for gnome ornaments and larger wooden beads for sock gnomes. I also like to use felt pom poms. Small felt pom poms are used for ornaments and larger felt pom poms for regular DIY gnomes.
You can see how I've used 1 1/2" wooden beads in my DIY sock gnomes.
I like to use these mini wooden beads for yarn gnomes and other ornaments. I like the assorted sizes.
This multi-pack came with a bunch of funny accessories for making gnomes. I'm currently working on a gnome with the Peace sign. Warning, you'll get a couple with the middle finger... lol
I like using fuzzy socks for making sock gnomes. I use them for hats, making a gnome body, and Easter gnomes.
There are quite a few gnome-making kits. I linked many of them on my Amazon storefront to make viewing them easier.
These are the Poly-Pellets I buy. I like the bag with the pour spout for easy filling. They can be more costly than rice so I use about 1/3 pellets and then stuff the rest of the way with polyester fiberfill. Rice can attract mice and other pests.
To give you more ideas, sunglasses are cute gnome accessories to use.
Gnome Beard Ideas
You can cut your gnome beards from faux fur or buy ready-made gnome beards for crafts to make your gnome-making even easier. You can even read about How To Make A Gnome Beard Out Of Yarn.
Gnome Nose Ideas
Gnome noses can be made with almost any round object. You can buy items for making a gnome nose or you can make one out of felt or fabric. Here are some of my favorite gnome nose ideas.
Gnome noses can be made with fabric or felt, but wooden beads are my favorite.
Gnome Hat Ideas
You can make gnome hats out of fabric or felt. I’ve also made flower pot gnomes with terra cotta pots for hats! You may find several other items for making gnome hats.
I also have a felt gnome hat pattern you can use!
Making Gnome Bodies | Gnome Filler Ideas
I like to make sock gnomes but I also like to sew gnome bodies with fabric. Making gnomes with styrofoam cones is another popular option.
I think the best filler for making gnomes is Poly Pellets and stuffing. I generally use 1/3 pellets in the bottom half of the gnome body and then finish filling the body with stuffing.
The best fabric to make gnomes is something tightly woven to contain the pellets or rice. If you use a looser weave sock, you can make a small pouch for the beads that fits down inside the body.
Gnome Makers and Resources
There are a lot of talented gnome makers. It would be impossible to name them all. I get a lot of inspiration from various shops. Here are a few of the gnomes and gnome accessories that I love!
