Today I’m going to show you how to make DIY felt flowers in several different ways. I love to make felt flower DIY projects and I use felt flowers in wreaths, garlands, and other home decor. The softness of the felt adds a lot of texture and they’re so easy to make. You can make felt flowers by hand and learn how to make felt flowers with Cricut or Silhouette cutting machines.
I have a few different styles of felt flowers to show you so let’s get started.
What Kind Of Felt Do You Use For Felt Flowers?
You can use standard felt sheets to make felt flowers or you can also spend a little more and use wool felt. Wool felt is a little more plush-looking but I tend to just stick with the more affordable option. Standard felt sheets at most craft stores are about 9″ x 12″.
You can buy standard felt sheets and also felt by the yard. Felt sheets are found in almost every craft store. Felt yardage can be found at fabric stores and online.
How To Make Easy DIY Felt Flowers
There are so many different styles of felt flowers and some are more complicated than others. Today we’re going to focus on some of the easiest DIY felt flowers you can make. We’re going to be rolling felt and gluing as we go. There are a few different styles we’ll cover today.
Resist the urge to use a lot of glue, less is better. Also, don’t squeeze too tightly or hot glue will seep out. That not only looks bad later, but it also hurts! If you know, you know…
Rolled Homemade Felt Flower DIY
For this flower, I used an entire sheet of felt to create a larger flower that turned out to be about 4″ wide when completed. First I cut the outer edges of the felt sheet into a wavy pattern then cut a spiral until I got to the center, leaving a larger circle or oval. The oval gets trimmed down if necessary at the end. One full sheet made the flower look nice and full.
Starting at the outside edge, you just roll the felt up working towards the center. Concentrate on keeping the bottom of the flower flush as you roll. Use the dot/oval in the center to fold over the bottom and secure with glue. I have an entire post about how to make rolled paper flowers and the process is the same with felt. There’s a video in the post as well.
DIY Felt Flower #2 – How to Make A DIY Felt Chrysanthemum
For the next two flowers, you’re going to start the same way.
- Cut a sheet of felt into 3″ x 12″ strips
- Fold the strips in half so they are 1.5″ x 12″ and glue on on the outer edge only with a thin bead of glue. Don’t glue the soft folded side.
- Do this to all three strips
For Flower #2, cut diagonal slits not quite all the way through the folds of all three strips. Roll the first strip up and glue as you go. Add the next two strips repeating this process. If you want smaller flowers, use fewer strips.
Felt Flowers DIY #3 – Felt MUM
Does anyone have a better name for this flower? Anyway, repeat the processes above for cutting, folding, and gluing the strips in half. Instead of cutting diagonal slits, leave a little straight edge and cut a triangle in the folds. Repeat until you get to the end of a strip and end it with another little straight edge.
First, I tried gluing the cut strips together just like we did in flower #2. The petals ended up on top of each other so the next time I layered the strips on top of each other off-setting the petals then rolling them all up at one time. You’ll have to decide which method works for you. I think I like the second method better.
How To Make Felt Flowers With Cricut
You can make rolled felt flowers with a Cricut or Silhouette. I’ve used this flower template SVG file for making felt flowers and also paper flowers in my Easy Paper Flower Wreath With Cricut. I will say that when using felt, I much preferred cutting this particular style by hand. When cutting felt flowers with a Cricut, they come out perfect but it took forever to get one flower cut.
Read this post if you want to cut felt without ruining your Cricut mat. I use a Cricut Maker to cut my felt. I learned the hard way and ruined my mat the first time I cut felt.
I sized the pink flower template below at 8″. You’ll have to click on Edit Cutting Tool and change to the rotary wheel and cut the piece of felt. I also set the pressure to medium. The simplest felt flower template is the fastest to cut.
This has to be the worst picture ever but it shows the flower on the top cut with the Cricut Maker and the one on the bottom cut by hand. they are about 3″ and 2″ wide.

If you’re making felt flowers with a Cricut, you can use one of many felt flower template designs that can be purchased on Etsy or other online sites. Some of these also come with PDF files you can cut by hand. Here are a few of my favorites:
