DIY Valentine's Day Wreath Made With A Cricut

I love to make paper crafts and you’ll find quite a few here at Hootshack. I make them for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, and just about every season.

Paper wreaths are a favorite of mine so be sure to check out the other paper wreaths I’ve made. I used the exact SVG file used in this heart wreath to make this Cricut wreath!

If you’re decorating for Valentine’s Day, this heart-shaped wreath is super easy and it is a show-stopper when complete. I made a few mistakes along the way, but lucky for you, I’m sharing them so you don’t do the same!

Supplies and Recommended Tools

You’re only going to need a few materials to make this paper flower wreath. I’ll link my favorite tools for you so they’re easy to find: (Affiliate links are used which means I may make a small commission at no cost to you if you purchase).

  • Cardstock – I used this pink cardstock pack and it has all of the colors I used
  • Wire wreath frame
  • Pink ribbon for the nicest look or cut strips of cardstock (more about this in a bit)
  • SVG Cut File – It’s cheap and I’ve made so many projects using it! I used flower templates 1, 2, and 3 for this project.

The recommended tool for this project is reverse grip tweezers if you have them. I got mine from Cricut but these reverse grip tweezers are cheaper. I used my fabric grip mat because my standard grip mat has seen better days!

I used my Cricut Maker to make this but I’m sure other models will work as well.

Instructions

When I first made this wreath, I used a styrofoam heart wreath frame. Because it’s so thick, it took a million more flowers than if I’d used a wire wreath frame as I did in my all-white Cricut wreath. (ok maybe not that many).

It looked really pretty in the end, so If you’re in it to win it, go ahead with that styrofoam wreath. Just know it will take a lot longer and will use a lot more flowers due to being able to see the sides and the inside of the wreath.

These step-by-step instructions are modified for the wire wreath frame.

If you're going to print these instructions for how to make a Cricut Valentine's wreath, don't forget to set your printer to black and white.

Materials

  • Wire wreath frame
  • Pink cardstock pack

Tools

  • Hot Glue Gun and reverse tweezers.

Instructions

    1. If you're going to see the back of this wreath (or sell it), wrap the wire wreath frame in pretty ribbon. If you don't care about the back, you can cut strips of the cardstock and glue or tape them around the frame. This helps the paper flowers stick. Full transparency here, mine looked like this. I know, impressive, right? I used all of the scraps.

    2. Cut out all of your paper flowers using your Cricut machine. If you have two mats, it speeds things up. My largest flowers were sized at 8 inches. I only made about 6 at this size and then ended up using some that were about 5" and just over 3". I did this because I could get three flowers out of one 8 1/2 x 11" sheet. (exact sizes 5.348 x 5 and 3.464 x 3.239). Here's how I lined those up.

    3. Pinch the end of a flower in your reverse grip tweezers and begin rolling towards you, focusing on keeping the bottom (straight edge) of the flower flush.

    4. When it's all rolled up, it will look like this. Gently release the flower using slow tapping motions to allow the flower to get a little larger. Bend the circle back so you can add glue.

    5. Add glue to the dot and fold it over the bottom pressing the flower together. Be careful, the glue is hot.

    6. With this particular flower style, you can use your thumb to spread out petals by gently bending them outward.

How many flowers do I need to make?

I used about 50 flowers for this wreath in various sizes. 6 of the large, 28 of the medium, and 16 of the small. The size will vary depending on how much you allow them to loosen up.

What size wreath does this make?

The heart frame is 9″ tall and the finished wreath size is 10″ tall.

Can you cut the flowers by hand?

If you have nothing but time, yes! lol. It would be very time-consuming, but you could try this style of paper wreath instead.

Happy crafting,

Denise
